My Diet

Unplanned vegan diet can be dangerous. This note might help me lighten the risks.

Current diet

Overview

I'm a strict vegetarian. Foodwise I'm a vegan, but veganism affects other parts of lifestyle, and I'm not completely into it yet.

I try to avoid:

  • any animal products, including:
    • meat, fish, dairy, etc.
    • gelatin, lactic acid, etc.
  • MSG a.k.a. E621 and other names
  • caffeine, as much as I can
    • means I'm not a big fan of tea and coffee
  • sugar and sweeteners
  • products with over 10-15% fat
    • pure nuts in significant quantities
    • all kinds of cheap "Korean" salads
    • chips, most French fries

Since December 2007 I've been binging a lot, consuming caffeine, sugars and fats in excessive quantities.

Details

During Fall 2007 my diet included:
  • buckwheat - staple; Mn, Trp, Mg, fiber
  • parsley - vitamins K, C, A
  • dill - Fe, Mn, Ca
  • rye bread
    • I need to cut down on this one
  • tofu

Energy

  • I really need to get under 2500 kc at all times and under 2000 kc for days with little activity (most days)

Fasting

  • orthodox fasting sounds like fun, I am going to try it

Modes

Modes have daily granularity.
  • xerophagy (what a word!): bread and water
    • not difficult unless more than just a few days
  • water fasting: just plain water, no calories
  • one meal: just one full meal a day
  • evening meal: just one full meal after 9 p.m.

Schedule

  • Monday - evening meal or water fasting
  • Wednesday, Friday - water fasting
  • great lent - one meal
    • from the last Thursday evening to Paskha - water fasting
  • other multi-day fasts - one meal probably, but no fasting right now
  • there are vital spiritual aspects of fasting, which should be described in a separate topic

Results

Monday/Wednesday/Friday water fasting led me to binges on all the other days of the week. Before long, the binges conquered the water fasting days and I consumed over 30-40 Mc a week for a while. The Great Lent didn't stop or slow me down much.
